Monthly Post Archive - July 2025

And it's August! We are closer to 2026 than we are further from 2024. Crazy, right? Not really? Well, let's just get to the posts.

There's a joke in Doctor Who where Peter Capaldi says "There's a horror movie called 'Alien'? [...] No wonder everyone keeps invading you" and that has me thinking: if extraterrestrials could view and experience our media, do you think they would or wouldn't fuck with "I crush the ALIEN" on YouTube?

This post originally didn't have the Doctor Who reference in there. I conceptualized it as solely a joke about I crush the ALIEN, but it felt too short and its punchline was somewhat predictable.

It would have looked something like this: "Do you think, if or when extraterrestrials make contact, they'll see YouTube Poop 'I crush the ALIEN' and see that as a declaration of violence?"

The ending of the post was the thing I struggled with most. Imagining an alien is reading this, but also keeping in mind that the joke needs to be funny, I needed to figure out the best way to end the joke. Do I insinuate that an alien would immediately jump to violence? That sounds presumptuous and stereotypical. Do I lower the severity to "they'd get mad?" No, that's not funny. When I remembered the Doctor Who quote, I realized I had a better framing device for the joke.

I mean, it's still not funny and probably still offensive to extraterrestrials, but I can just blame Steven Moffat for the second part.

Also, fun fact, on PC, you can attach a link to a Bluesky post, wait for the embed to load, and remove the link while still keeping the embed. For a website with a restrictive character limit, I did appreciate this exploit while making this post.

I'm LIVE Playing Tails' Story in Sonic Adventure for the First Time Ever! Check it out! chillincreative.cc/live

If you haven't seen the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles races I did with Melody, there was a running gag through those that I hated Tails born solely out of the fact that I played as just Sonic to avoid getting pwned during the Sonic 2 half-pipe and to avoid getting accidentally picked up by Tails in Sonic 3 AIR. I did consider continuing that as a stream bit for the Tails' Story stream, as if that was gonna be the narrative of the stream. Like, "I hate that two-tailed fox!" As the stream would progress, I'd grow more of a liking to Tails and an unlikely appreciation for Sonic the Hedgehog's best friend would form in my heart or something. That was an idea for a narrative, but I figured that's stupid. So.

The thumbnail, too, had some iteration. I really couldn't fucking properly emulate Tails' poses from the promotional art in my style. Here is every attempt for this stream's thumbnail:

A drawing of Chillin posed kind of awkwardly. It doesn't look very natural or dynamic. A redraw of the previous drawing.

The second image here was drawn by Aspestose. I think this is what made me realize the post was doomed from the start. So, I tried some other poses.

A drawing of Chillin stood cutely. Two large tails curl behind her. A drawing of Chillin wrapped in Tails' tails.

I actually mentioned both of these on-stream, so, sorry for the rehash, if you've already watched the stream or the VOD. Though, if you haven't, I go into the failed thumbnails for the second Sonic Adventure stream, so feel free to check those out too via the VOD on YouTube.

It's not clear from the embed, but the first post was made on July 6th, and the second on July 10th. I did, when making the original post, forget about the fact that I had done that. The only reason I remembered, is because, a few days later, I found myself humming the attached video. I think my thought was something like "wait, I did do that. Fuck."

I made that between September 15th, 2021 and September 17th, 2021, scheduling it to release the minute DELTARUNE: Chapter 2 dropped. I wasn't super satisfied with it, and, to be honest, I still don't particularly like it. It focuses so much on UNDERTALE, the combination logo chosing to put the Traversal logo's "T" into the UNDERTALE logo instead of the DELTARUNE one. However, it's still a thing that exists and that predates the Twitter Don't Forget trend. I just did this shit for fun; it wasn't even a meme yet."

The thumbnail was actually first try this time around, so that was nice. Though I don't have anything to talk about regarding it, so that's a bit annoying for the sake of this webpage. Nevertheless, I really liked the way Knuckles' movement felt. Perfect translation of his 2D moveset to 3D, while adding its own elements. That being said, this stream really cemented Chillin-being-dogwater-at-Sonic-Adventure-final-bosses as a pattern. Luckily, Amy's final boss is notoriously a cakewalk, so... uh...

SPOILERS for PLAYING KNUCKLES' STORY IN SONIC ADVENTURE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER: The final part of the Knuckles' story stream, I played the built-in port of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Game Gear and asked if I had missed some stuff I knew about Sonic Adventure's story, but hadn't seen yet. The response was just that it was recommended I fucking play the game. This put me onto talking about spoilers for films. I had yet to see Superman and I'd avoided every trailer I could. I went into that film blind. My friend Michelle put me onto this kind of not-even-watching-trailers thing when I got to see her react to seeing characters in No Way Home the trailers had explicitly shown, but that she didn't know were there. For that reason, I do not watch trailers. It also often happens were you ask people who have seen a film to not spoil it for you, and then they go on to joke about "oh, it was crazy when [insert character here] did [insert action here]" because they know it doesn't happen in the film, but, like, that's still a spoiler! To quote myself in the stream, "stop saying what characters are in or aren't in the film. You gotta realize that's spoilers. Saying a character's not in a film is a spoiler." By my own logic, showcasing scrapped elements of Traversal's story is still a spoiler; showing off an unused character and saying "they aren't in the game anyway" is a spoiler. Showcasing an early version of a future island that changed dramatically enough that I don't consider it to be the same island is still a spoiler. There are instances of me spoiling stuff on social media before I got put on my anti-spoiler-hate-train, but I love me an archive. Those posts stay up. Anyway, I'll probably show off unused ideas sometime after development has wrapped, but that wasn't July 2025, so it's not happening.

I also had what I would refer to as a "Jerma moment" in that stream where I just started ragging on one of my friends for something she didn't say. (I shouldn't pin this on Jerma. It was my mistake.)

NOTE: this notation and the media attached have minor, played-for-laughs references to suicide. If this is something that you'd rather avoid, you can skip ahead by clicking here.

Okay, so. The final boss of Amy's story takes three — count 'em: three — hits to kill. I died eight — count 'em: eight — times before my successful ninth attempt. On just the fifth attempt, I said something I really shouldn't have. I mean, I tried to save it, but it's pretty clear what "servos" in "fuck this Zero guy. [...] Kill your servos" is substituting. Nevertheless, it reminded me of a moment on Michelle's Twitch channel when her and I played Sven Coop, so I stitched them together.

Trying to describe fucked up spritesheet-based animations is difficult to do unless you're already aware of this. Two recent — (not really) — examples are Friday Night Funkin' mods from 2020 and Rivals of Aether workshop characters. Both games opt to use spritesheets for their modding scene, so there's a lot of problems that arise there when modders don't keep things aligned across the sprite sheet. There are definitely other examples, whether older or newer, but those two are the first things I think of when I visualize this effect.

I made this joke in response to a Tekken GIF Aspestose sent me. My response was the post text. The "#ah ah ah" tag is based on Aspestose's response to what I'd written, which was, verbatim, "ah ah ah".

I probably should have held onto this joke until I'd found an example of more than one Count Dracula in a scene or photo, but I didn't.

I'm LIVE Playing Big's Story in Sonic Adventure for the First Time Ever! Check it out! chillincreative.cc/live

It clicked about halfway through Big's story that his inclusion is so fucking funny. I was going into the game knowing Big as a recurring Sonic character. Imagine you're a Sonic fan, and you got Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast when it released. You open the game to see Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails from Sonic 2, Knuckles from Sonic 3, and Amy from Sonic CD. Immediately following Amy is a big purple cat you've never heard of before. His levels are all fishing levels and he barely interacts with the main story of the game. Sonic and Tails ignore him in the Adventure Fields they share. He's just kind of there. It's hilarious. And now he appears in Sonic Frontiers — a game that doesn't even feature Shadow the Hedgehog — in its fishing minigame. In short, Big the Cat was a genius-level addition to the series.

https://www.tumblr.com/camillechillin/790553829527748608/has-anyone-done-a-phonetic-wheel-of-fortune

I was rewatching Tom Scott's Language Files and after watching his video on the vowel sound, Ə, this idea appeared in my mind: a letter-guessing game where instead of guessing letters from the English language, you're guessing letters from the International Phonetic Alphabet. I posted about it with the intention to, like Tom Scott has done in the past, make it happen in some form whether I create some UsVsTh3m-esque, quickly-slapped-together webtoy or host a "pilot" episode of a phonetic letter-guessing game show that plays like Wheel of Fortune. (Tom Scott has done way too many game shows for me to pick a specific example for this.)

After posting this on Bluesky, bethposting immediately started making me play the game.

okay, four letters when written in IPA. it's an English adjective. go _ _ _ _

— beth (cool) (@bethposting.bsky.social) July 30, 2025 at 11:02 PM

After twenty-two — count em: twenty-two — guesses, I finally guesses the word: pink. I went to sleep in between the start of the game and the end of it. That's how long it took to win. While guessing, I attached such phrases as "What have I gotten myself into?" and "Oh my fucking god. Is there a single vowel sound in the entire word?" to my replies. So, my conclusion is that the game needs some workshopping, but I am still tempted to figure out how to properly make a game like this.

Anyway, that was July! Here comes August! Let's hope it gets nice and cool from this point forward in the year. Please...?
